The agreement signed by the University of Waikato, Bay of Plenty Polytechnic and China's Yantai University sets up a four-year degree, made up of two years studying for a Diploma of Accounting or International Trade at Yantai University.

This will be followed by a one-year business diploma at BOP Polytechnic and a further year to complete a Bachelor of Business Administration at the University of Waikato.

University of Waikato deputy vice-chancellor professor Alister Jones says the agreement builds on the longstanding and strong relationship between Tauranga and Yantai – and forms another important connection between Waikato University and the Bay.

'We consider the BOP an important part of the University of Waikato and over time we will see more of these relationships being forged, providing access to an increasingly diverse range of courses in Tauranga.

'That will mean more students studying in Tauranga, providing a valuable boost to the local economy.”

Yantai University was established in 1984, with help from China's two most prestigious universities, Peking University and Tsinghua University, and has about 24,000 students.

In light of the agreement, a statement of intent to establish a new coastal biotechnology research centre with bases in Tauranga and China has also been signed by Waikato University and Yantai Institute of Coastal Zone Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The intension is to establish the China-NZ Coastal Biotechnology Joint Research Centre, aiming to integrate coastal biotechnology research experts and align administration sections, investors, industry and international businesses.

Focus areas for the new centre will include multi-trophic integrated aquaculture, bio-product and biofuel development.
