Serving up title success

Papamoa Tennis Club are reaping the rewards of enticing children away from video games and the television by scooping a trio of titles at the annual Tennis Waikato-Bays awards.

In a busy night of accolades, the club won club of the year, coach of year and volunteer of the year on top of various team awards – capping off a rapid rise in the tennis club ranks.

After recording just 54 juniors, four to 18 years old, and 39 seniors back in 2012/2013, the club can lay claim to undergoing a dramatic transformation – currently having more than 120 juniors and 60 seniors on its books.

'We have done a lot of work around the schools to drive them there,” says Papamoa Tennis Club president Bevin Hartley.

'We have set up the youth tennis scholarship programme, free coaching through the schools and Friday free lessons.”

Based at the BayTrust Tennis Centre, on Gordon Spratt Reserve, the club has four astro and two hard courts within the BayTrust Centre 16 court layout.

The entire facility is a base for the Western Bay of Plenty Junior Tennis programme and frequently hosts large junior tournaments.

Bevin, winning volunteer of the year, with wife Michele, says the club prides itself on being a 'smiling face” for anyone interested in joining – something which is paying dividends both in court and in the coaching ranks.

Not only has the club nearly tripled its members but it has one of New Zealand's most recognised coaches in Peter Blow – winner of coach of the year.

Bevin says Peter has been a driving force in helping strengthen the clubs profile in the Western Bay of Plenty after moving down from Auckland three seasons ago.

Starting his coaching career in 1991, Peter has won eight national teams event gold medals, coached more than 20 national champions, a national masters champion in 2006, 2007, 2008 – and is a three-time national world junior tennis team coach.

'It is nice recognition that the club is heading in a very strong and definite direction. Our byline for our club is ‘creating a community through sport' and that's exactly what our club direction is.

'We don't aim to be the best tennis club in terms of players we aim to be a community based club that definitely gets kids away from the PlayStation and outside and moving.”
