A Tauranga man is recovering from broken ribs and ligament damage after a Fraser St crash yesterday.

Acting Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Sergeant Mike Owen says the 52-year-old man was running across the road from Fraser Cove to try and catch a the bus when he was hit by the Honda Accord.

The car sustained damage to its windscreen after the man rolled up the bonnet, smashing into it.

He was later taken to Tauranga Hospital by St John Paramedics with an area of blood washed off the road by police.

Mike says initial reports of the man being hit by the bus caused some confusion at the time but it was just the car involved.

'The man was hit by a car while running across the road to get to the bus,” says Mike.

'The man has suffered two broken ribs, ligament damage to the right knee and cuts and bruises to the face.”

Bay of Plenty District Health Board communications manager Diana Marriott says the 52-year-old is in a stable condition.

Senior Constable Steve Murray said at the time, the bus was picking up passengers on the opposite side of the road when the man was struck by the car.

Both the woman driving the Honda and the bus driver were shocked from seeing what happened.
