Kidnapping suspect escapes custody

The man arrested for kidnapping a woman from Auckland, who later escaped in the Coromandel, has escaped police custody.

Brett Makiri, 23, was arrested yesterday and charged with kidnapping and assault of a 29-year-old woman on Monday.

Brett Makiri escaped police custody overnight.

Detective Senior Sergeant John Sutton says the woman was driven to the Coromandel instead of to a friend's house in a suburb near to her home in Glen Innes.

'She was assaulted various times throughout the journey and managed to escape near Coromandel Town when the stolen car ran out of petrol.

'This was a frightening ordeal for the victim”

Makiri was arrested yesterday afternoon and a short time later, escaped police custody.

He was last seen wearing a dark t-shirt, knee length shorts and white shoes.

Police say he doesn't have any other belongings with him and it is possible that he will ask for money or attempt to hitch hike a ride to his next destination.

He was at the Auckland Central Police Station in Cook St, central city.

Police ask that anyone who sees Mr Makiri calls 111 immediately. He is considered dangerous and police advise members of the public not to assist him in fleeing police.

'At this stage we are very focused on Makiri's recapture,” says Detective Inspector Karyn Malthus.

'There will be an investigation into the circumstances of his escape."

Makiri has links to various addresses in West and South Auckland and may be in the Waikato, Coromandel or Auckland areas.

He also has a warrant for his arrest in relation to a failure to appear in Waitakere District court on March 17.
