Homeless shelter: your thoughts

The Youth Hostel in Elizabeth Street could soon be replaced with Tauranga's first night shelter which will accommodate a growing number of homeless people in the city.

The proposed decision to replace the hostel with a night shelter comes after Tauranga City Council agreed to approve the use of the land occupied by YHA for the purpose of Tauranga Moana Nightshelter Trust establishing a night shelter.

Initially, the proposed night shelter would be a men-only facility because council says there is a greater need to shelter homeless men.

The shelter would operate on set hours when homeless arrive and depart the facility and will operate within a code of conduct, which includes clear behavioural guidelines, the employment of full-time manager and staffed at night by an on-site night manager.

SunLive talked to people on the streets of Tauranga to see what they think of the idea.

Looks like here in Tauranga the council must have plenty of money and assets and not much debt?

Yes, welfare is a government job, so good to see local government helping provide welfare to those not as lucky as ourselves.

We live in a social welfare system. That means for someone unemployed about $180.00 per week, accommodation supplement is there if needed and so on. Where are these homeless people spending their money? If it is on alcohol or drugs (or whatever) then they need assistance to prioritise their funds ie shelter and food comes first? Please can someone help e to understand this, I would love the Sunlive to interview a few of these "homeless" people to understand how their dire circumstances have occurred.
