Tauranga Direct Road closed

UPDATE 1PM: The direct road from Tauranga to Rotorua remains closed today due to a slip in the gorge during the recent wild weather.

A New Zealand Transport Agency spokesperson says the section of State Highway 36 is still closed and will not reopen until at least midday Tuesday.

A slip in the Mangorewa Gorge on the Tauranga Direct Road.

'Conditions do change and people are advised to check, or phone NZTA prior to travelling.”

Police and NZTA closed the highway on Thursday due to a slip in the Mangorewa Gorge past Te Matai Road.

Motorists travelling from Tauranga to Rotorua should use SH33 via Te Puke, or SH5, 8, or 29 over the Kaimai Range.

At the Rotorua side a diversion is in place at Dudley and SH36 and traffic on this route is advised the best route is SH33 via Te Puke.

Between this page and the BOP Police FB page this is the only accurate info available.....NZTA site is hopeless. I'm heading back to Rotorua later in the day so hopefully it's open. Thanks for the updates SUNLIVE
