Riders, from beginner to advanced, are taking to the track today with elite riders competing for the top spot.

Speaking to SunLive from the track this morning, organiser Jill Peck says the elite and super class races have finished, with finals expected to begin about 1.30pm.

Despite having to reduce national championship races to one day due to stormy weather, organisers are not letting today's forecast of afternoon showers and thunder put a damper on the excitement.

'Everybody is excited. It's a great day for racing out there today. All of the Tauranga riders seem to be doing pretty well too, so that's a good start for the first round.”

Tauranga BMX Club has a little more than 80 riders in the national event, hosted by the club for the first time.
