Emergency services responded to the crash after police received a call reporting the car in the river about 30km from Opotiki about 11am on Wednesday.

The car, carrying the woman and two children, is believed to have left the road, flipped and landed in the river.

The woman was found unconscious in the partly submerged car, and had to be freed by firefighters. The children managed to escape from the car and the trio were airlifted by a TrustPower TECT Rescue Helicopter to Tauranga Hospital.

A Tauranga Hospital spokeswoman yesterday told New Zealand Herald the woman is still in intensive care. The eight-year-old girl was discharged on Saturday and a four-year-old was in a stable condition yesterday.
