Opotiki crash victims named

The two men who died when the tow truck they were in rolled down a bank in a remote area east of Opotiki yesterday are Gordon Douglas Nelson, 67, and Frederick Michael Ruff, 70.

The Opotiki men died after the tow truck crashed off a narrow gravel road and rolled down a 30 metre bank at 1.30pm on Thursday.

The accident was on the remote Takaputahi Road, Toatoa, east of Opotiki.

Police say an investigation into the crash – in which Gordon was driving – is continuing but it is believed weather could have been a factor..

People in another vehicle witnessed the incident and had to travel out of the area to seek assistance as the remote area has no phone coverage.

Police and ambulance were notified at 2.55pm and immediately dispatched resources to the scene.
