Signage spelling set straight

Western Bay of Plenty roading authorities are apologetically replacing sign on a State Highway 29 across the Kaimai Range after a complaint from a Maori kaumatua over the use of the letter ‘s'.

Matamata kaumatua Will Murray is extremely happy the Western Bay of Plenty Road Safety Committee is agreeing to remove the ‘s' from the sign reading ‘Have a safe trip over the Kaimais'.

NZTA has replaced the wording on the left with the new wording on the right.

"It makes a mockery of the Maori language," says Will, referring to the sign on the Hamilton side.

"There has never been, and never will be, an ‘s' in the Maori alphabet.”

Will submit a letter to the committee last month asking the New Zealand Transport Agency to remove the s and place ‘Range' underneath Kaimai.

The committee is made up of Western Bay of Plenty District Council, Tauranga City Council Bay of Plenty Regional Council, NZ Transport Agency, ACC and Police.

According to the report, Will was alerted to the signs by non-Maori members of the public and after driving to investigate was disappointed by what he found.

'The bottom statement ‘Just the facts' contradicts itself completely.

'I understand that they [the ranges] are referred to as ‘the Kaimais' in everyday conversation, but to have it on a sign that visitors from around the country, and world, are going to see is a disgrace.”

Western Bay of Plenty District Council transportation manager Alex Finn confirms the change in wording has been made and Will has personally viewed the amended version.

But Alex believes the change refers to the single sign rather than similar road signs across the Kaimai Range.

'There are other signs but different wording so they aren't implicated in the mistake. As far as I know there is one sign replaced and would have cost a couple of hundred dollars,” says Alex.

'It wasn't brought up a council level, it was discussed amongst the technical staff members of the committee who make the decision as to the exact wording on signs and their locations.”

A statement from the committee since apologises for any offence caused.

"We meant no disrespect with installing the billboard," says the committee.

"This was installed as part of the series of billboards making up the "Just the Facts" road safety campaign covering State Highway [29] from the Kaimai Range through to Tauranga.

"These emphasise to drivers the need to be aware of their driving conditions and to keep speeds down, and help lower the number of crashes that occur along this section of state highway."

Will says the committee needs to be commended for acknowledging a mistake has been made.

Every letter in the so-called maori alphabet came from the english alphabet. Maori did not have grammar, spelling, punctuation or anything. Therefore every maori word was translated. So stop being so precious about something that was given to maori by the settlers and so far, we have never been compensated for it.

thank you

No disgrace, an oversight!

"There has never been, and never will be, an ‘s' in the Maori alphabet.” ... Hold your hand up if you knew there is an alphabet specific to Maori. Will says, "'I understand that they [the ranges] are referred to as ‘the Kaimais' in everyday conversation, but to have it on a sign that visitors from around the country, and world, are going to see is a disgrace.” Steady on Will, an oversight at best, immediately remedied!

The Kaimais is short for Kaimai Range, just like the Tararuas is short for the Tararua Range and the Rimutakas is short for Rimutaka Range. Talk about being anal. Since when is abbreviation bad?

Correct

Murray Guy is correct stating that there never has been a Maori alphabet. The written Maori language is not written in Maori but is an Englishman's interpretation of the Maori language written in English.

Sign of the times...

Yet another storm in a tea cup. Surely the "mistake" did not require a committee and a long report to rectify the situation? My Christian name has a number of variations in spelling but so far it has not needed a group meeting to politely have it corrected!

Thank Goodness!!

I have been so embarrassed every time I go over the KAIMAI to see this incorrect signage. Just as well we have such an influential "COMMITTEE" that can take care of these catastrophic things that so hugely influence the safe driving habits of New Zealanders. Every time is saw that sign it was an affront to my culturally correct sensibilities. I am sure the chest pains from anxiety after having seen it effected my driving/riding abilities. Now I can drive/ride the Kaimai to the Waikato for a coffee and not suffer those debilitating symptoms. Thank you to the sharp eyed Non-Maori member of the public for bringing this "mockery of the Maori language" to the WBOP Roading Authorities attention.

Kaimai Range

Mr Murray might like to know that the word Range has no Maori equivalent

Painful

Judging by all the "sympathetic" comments it looks as though Mr Murray has made a mountain out of a molehill and on top of that has shot himself in the foot. Ouch !

Horror of Horrors

Will Murray had better get his writing hat on again. Flicking around the channels last night I noticed on the news on the Maori channel last night that they use an "s" on the end of Maori names where applicable in the English interpretation at the bottom of the screen. So s83cruiser had better not watch this channel in case they have a heart attack.

Thank you Jitter

for the heads up. I will avoid that channel at all cost on health grounds. Heaven forbid I should see a couple of S's and snuff out.

Jim's Gonna be in Trouble

Posted on 21-04-2014 19:10 | By s83cruiser

Just heard Jim refer to "The Kaimai's tonight when he was doing the weather. He's in for a roasting!!! The politically correct police are going to be on to him. I trust he will be censured by TV NZ as well. NOT GOOD ENOUGH JIM. You should know that there is no "S" in the Maori alphabet. For a gaff like this to be committed on national television what does it tell the rest of the world about us. Now those visitors from around the world will know that the Maori language is not only mocked on road signage but on national television as well. I hope Will Murray takes TVNZ to task on this issue as well.

The esteemed B.O.P Times feature writer, and champion of Maoridom, Mr Tommy Kapai in an article about the Western B.O.P published 10/05/14 clearly refers to the "Kaimai" as the "Kaimais", soooooooo when he cannot even get his own language correct, why should we even bother, shame on you Tommy.

"It makes a mockery of the Maori language." An interesting atatement coming from a "kaumatua" named Will Murray!
