Car crashed into river

A woman is in serious condition after her car crashed into the Waioeka River, 35km west of Opotiki.

Police responded to a call just after 11.30am reporting a woman was trapped and unconscious in a partially submerged car.

A car has crashed into the river in the Waioeka Gorge.

Police say two children were also involved in the crash but are out of the small hatchback, which had crashed 15m down a bank.

'Emergency services are at the scene and woman has now been extracted from the car and is in serious condition,” says a statement from police.

'The children have less serious injuries. A helicopter is en-route to the scene to airlift lift the victims to hospital as the scene is remote and it is not possible to get the injured woman out of the river bed and up to the road.”

The helicopter is expected to arrive about 12.15pm.

The serious crash unit has been called to the scene and is investigating the circumstances of the crash.
