Residents in Murupara may have had an early morning wakeup call with a magnitude 3.8 earthquake hit east of the town early this morning.
GeoNet reports the quake hit 35km east of Murupara about 1.20am.
The quake had a focal depth of 8km.
The earthquake was followed by a weaker quake 20 minutes later.
The second earthquake had a focal depth of 7km and registered 1.8 on the Richter scale.
