Sisters in with master chance

Maketu sisters Karena and Kasey Bird are still in the running to win the MasterChef cooking show after Verena Doolabh and Tanisha Kemp were voted out of the show on Monday night.

Verena and Tanisha's departure comes after Tauranga sisters Trudie and Shelley Robinson left the show last week.

Maketu sisters Karena and Kasey Bird have made it into the next round of the MasterChef cooking show.

Verena Doolabh and Tanisha Kemp were the 12th duo to leave the show on Monday.

In Sunday night's episode, the top four had headed to Bali where Tanisha and Verena ended up alongside Nikki and Jordan Shearer in the bottom two, after failing to excite the judges with their multi-cultural dishes.

Instead of one duo being sent home, both teams were told they'd been given a second chance, but would need to catch up to the others to avoid elimination.

On Monday night, the top four made their way to the world-famous Bumbu Bali Cooking School for the crucial second challenge - a traditional Indonesian banquet.

MasterChef New Zealand judge Josh Emmet warned the bottom two they needed to turn out the best dishes of their lives.

Getting stuck into the challenge, the pair were confident the two-and-a-half hour time limit was enough to complete the five dishes, but the cracks quickly began to show.

Well behind the other teams, and with only 45 minutes to go, the sisters burned their spice paste, used over-heated oil for their peanuts, and discovered their lamb was not as tender as it should have been.

When the gong sounded to mark the end of the challenge, they knew they were in trouble yet again.

'At the start we thought we had a recipe and we'd be fine, but it's going to come down to the quality and the taste and we don't know if that's there,” says Tanisha.

Filming for the show is now over, with the series airing on Sunday and Monday nights from 7.30pm on TV One.

If Karena and Kasey win at the end of the series, they'll get the MasterChef New Zealand title and more than $100,000 worth of prizes, including two Skoda Rapid Spaceback cars, $15,000 worth of designer kitchen appliances from Fisher and Paykel, $5000 in kitchenware courtesy of Stevens, $15,000 worth of groceries from Countdown and an exclusive ‘MasterChef' cookbook deal.

the whole lot of them should be put out of the competition. Hair NOT tied back and NOT wearing gloves.

They were not voted off, they simply lost that round.I think the judges turned into bullies.I also think that was entirely unnecessary and only caused a lot of stress. Cooking should be a stress free and enjoyable activity, which in turn produces great dishes. It was unpleasant to watch the way they treated all the contestants this last challenge.Asian and Indonesian cooking is not difficult; I do it all the time. Being shouted at and having that kind of pressure put on a person who is not familiar with the kitchen or much of the recipes is downright nasty, competition or not. I compliment all the contestants for their valiant efforts in such a difficult situation.
