Marine legacy offered to city

Tauranga City councillors appear keen to jump onboard an offer to ensure the city's lasting legacy is marine-related through a partnership with Marine Reach.

The non-profit organisation that runs aid ships including the Pacific Hope, currently undergoing a re-fit in Tauranga, is proposing a closer association with the city.

The MV Pacific Hope is undergoing a refit here in Tauranga.

Council staff will be asked to look further into the offer, made by Marine Reach Asia-Pacific CEO Jesse Misa during a presentation to the community development committee this week.

The relationship could provide a lasting legacy for Tauranga, says Jesse.

'I would like to see the city adopt Marine Reach and the ship, I would like to see a long term partnership with TCC as the ship is a unique tool to reach out to our young people,” says Jesse.

Over the longer term, say 500 years, the relationship with Marine Reach could be what people look back on as Tauranga's contribution to the world, says Jesse.

'Can we visit the ship first?” says Matt Cowley.

Marine Reach gave its ship Pacific Link to the city of Townsville in 2006 says Jesse, a decision that has worked very well for Townsville and the people of Papua New Guinea that the vessel serves.

The offer came after Jesse explained the recent work being undertaken on the former fishing boat Pacific Hope berthed in Tauranga at the former slipway jetty.

Marine Reach vessels are converted into seagoing medical and dentistry centres providing mainly medical aid to the developing world. The Pacific Hope serves mainly the central Pacific island nations; Tonga Fiji Vanuatu.

Marine Reach Ministries are overtly Christian but non-proselytising, says Jesse. The Ministries New Zealand operation has been Tauranga based since 1990. To read more about the Project Hope click here.

This is not a Council concern

There is no way our highly indebted Council should be getting involved in such a partnership or whatever you call it. If individuals wish to support this Christian aid organisation, that is fine. But it is not the role of Council. A quick no would be the right answer.

Ratepayers funded berthage

I recall last year Mayor Crosby seeking 'informal' feedback from Councillors in regard the ratepayers subsidizing the berth fees of Marine Reach. The response was to provide such ratepayer support to one charity was inappropriate. I believe the Mayor is Patron. There is no argument that the organisation provides valuable support to our needy Pacific neighbours, just as many do for our community (eg: those paying commercial rents & rates at the Historic Village).

they do not know how to cut costs professionally, why would you slash core ratepayer amenities?when you can have your photo taken with another "do gooder" organisation, clean up our back yard first please!!!!

Yes I bet Mr Misa would like a partnership with our indebted council - obviously with great benefit to him and his organisation! There is no doubt that we would be left a 'lasting legacy' - like all the other bitter tasting 'lasting legacies' we are already paying out for!! It is not something that council should be involved with. First and foremost they should be dealing with those matters needing urgent attention in their own back yard!

NEVER

The council has a huge debt level - NO ratepayer money to any "private aid organisation".

The comments are enlightening

What do Marine Reach actually want? What is a partnership? Do they really want subsidised or free berthage provided by the council (ratepayer)? If so, come out an say it. Marine reach seems to be a charity and as such it is up to individuals to choose to fund, NOT Council.

It is so easy to give away other peoples money ratepayers money is supposed to be for their own region, if the Mayor or any other Councilor wants to support this charity do so with your own money
