Tauranga's Independent MP Brendan Horan remains in Tauranga Hospital today where he is being treated for blood poisoning.

The Mount Maunganui resident was admitted to hospital on Friday due to an infection in his leg that led to blood poisoning.

Speaking from his hospital bed this morning, Brendan says he is feeling 'pretty ordinary” but is expected to be discharged later today.

'They are going to let me go home today and I will return to see the nurse to get a daily dose of antibiotics, and we'll see how that goes.”

Brendan suffered a haematoma on his shin about three months ago. He is not sure exactly how it developed into an infection but says bacteria has somehow made its way into the haematoma.

He believes one of the causes may have been contamination from checking pollution levels of streams and rivers around the Bay of Plenty.

'I'm pretty sure it came about when I was checking inlets for pollution. I regularly go out the Kaituna River to check run-off. It would be impossible to say for sure.”

After spending the weekend in hospital, Brendan is looking forward to returning home today, but is disappointed he will have to cancel a scheduled trip to China later this week.

'I was due to go to China but I am putting that on hold until next year.”
