Earlier report:

The Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management has issued a tsunami potential threat advisory to all of New Zealand coastal areas after a magnitude 7.6 earthquake hit the Solomon Islands this morning.

The earthquake struck Solomon Islands about 8.15am at a depth of 33km.

The quake's epicentre was located 324 kilometers south-east of Honiara – the capital of Solomon Islands.

Originally registered as magnitude 8.3, the earthquake has been downgraded to 7.6.

The Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management says the potential threat, including the Chatham Islands, will remain in effect until it is upgraded to a tsunami warning or a cancellation message is given.

People in coastal areas should note a tsunami is possible, and are advised to listen to the radio and television for further assessment and updates.
