Bankers bike for St John

Bankers are trading the booths for bikes today as they use pedal power to raise money for the annual St John Appeal.

The cycleathon at ASB in Papamoa is one of a number of fundraisers, along with school mufti-days, happening this week for St John's appeal, which finishes on Sunday.

Papamoa Branch Manager Loraine Cornelian says ASB is the major sponsor of St John, so most days this week Tauranga branches have been fundraising in their own unique way.

'We decided in Papamoa to do something a little bit different. We came up with the idea of doing a 111 cycle film. For every $11 that clients and customers donate, the ASB team will jump on a bike and cycle for a kilometre.

'All ASB staff are kindly donating their time to jump on pedal. I didn't have to persuade anybody,” she says.

All four bikes were donated by Snap Fitness and the 10-person ASB Papamoa cycling team had a tag system throughout the day.

The St John Te Puke ambulance crew are also at the event, giving free blood pressure checks and advice for residents. From 3pm there will be face painting for children.

'With all the different fundraising we've [ASB Papamoa] been doing all week, we're up to at least $500. We're hoping to double that by the end of today,” says Loraine.

All money raised goes to St John Ambulance.

'It's been a big push this week to raise an awareness of St John and to raise as much [money] as we possibly can for them.”
