Heavy rain warning for Bay

Tauranga has received 38.2mm of rain in the last 24 hours as the MetService issues a severe weather warning and thunderstorm watch for the region.

MetService media and communications meteorologist Dan Corbett says Tauranga is right in the midst of the rain radar, which indicates localised thunderstorms moving across the city.

A heavy rain and thunderstorm warning has been issued for the region.

'If people look on MetService website they will see a nice bit of cloud as the centre of the low curls around the Bay.

'The city is in the thick of it. It's not picnic weather.”

Dan says the rain will be heavy for the most part of the day.

'In the last hour for instance, Tauranga has picked up about 6mm. It's certainly getting into the ground.”

Other areas have also had a good helping of rain with the Kaimais recording 82mm, Matamata getting 40mm and Hamilton's 40mm in the last 24 hours.

'This low will move through and it looks like the back edge of it comes through late and clears from Tauranga, but will linger in Whakatane and Eastern Bay until the early afternoon.

'Then the weather system will clear away as the wind moves to the west and leaves some drier and brighter weather for the first part of the weekend.”

According to the MetService in the nine hours from 9am to 6pm Friday, a further 60 to 70mm of rain may accumulate in some places west of Opotiki. Rainfall intensities could reach 20 to 30mm per hour at times with possible thunderstorms.

LIGHTS PEOPLE!!!

Astounding how many idiots have their licence to drive, but can't turn on their lights in this sort of weather so they can be seen on the road. Could be a 'revenue' maker for sure if they got ticketed!
