UPDATE 3.21PM: A section of State Highway 2 between the Wairoa River Bridge and Minden Road at Te Puna is now open after being closed for several hours after a diesel spill earlier today.
Diversions were in place for north-bound traffic at Te Puna Station Road, which loops around Clarke Road and back onto SH2, and for south-bound at Te Puna Road.
Traffic being diverted down Te Puna Station Road off SH2.
The spill on a section of highway, north of McGregors fruit shop near Clarke Road, was discovered about 8.38am.
It is understood it was discovered by one truck towing another up the hill towards Tauranga.
Acting Senior Sergeant Wayne Hunter says police were at the scene attempting to clear the road.
'Officers were trying to either put sand on the road or wash the diesel away so the road is no longer dangerous.”
The spill resulted in diversions being put in place until the road was cleaned.

Why are they diverting the north bound traffic causing a crossover and further delays?
