Legal highs: the seller's side

A Tauranga shop owner which sells synthetic cannabis has no hard feelings after people choose to protest the sale of legal highs outside his store on the corner of Cameron Road and 16th Ave today.

Special T Discounter, formerly known as Puff n Stuff, owner Mike Lawrence says everyone has the right to protest what they believe in, himself included.

'If I find something that is not right and believe in the cause, I would stand up and have my say about it as well.”

The rally in Tauranga today is part of a nationwide protest to try and get synthetic cannabis banned.

Mike says he has been trying to work with the mental health unit in Tauranga to see what ways he can help their clients.

He says because of the privacy act there is very little they can officially do.

'So basically, we have taken it on our own backs to create a programme called to ‘consumer exclusion programme' where people who find they are struggling with this stuff, whether they are getting to addicted to it or finding their spending too much money, they are coming in and they are actually starting to talk to us about this.

'We try and help our customers manage how much they are using, the same as a bar owner would if they think a customer has had too much.”

From Mike's understanding, the number of people who experience issues with synthetic cannabis is relatively small.

'From what I understand of the total number of products sold to people, 0.1 per cent have actually had an issue, 99.9 per cent of the people, as I understand it, are using it responsibly.”

He says the prime example of using it responsibly is a husband and wife couple who come into his store.

'They used to drink up to three bottles of wine, get into an argument he hits her and things go really bad.

'They have since started smoking synthetic cannabis and on Friday nights they smoke a little, he falls asleep in front of the TV, she giggles at him and tells him to go to bed and that's it.”

Mike says being responsibly is knowing your limit and knowing when to stop, a lot of people don't have that when they take other substances, such as alcohol.

'Well over 90 per cent of my customers are enjoying it socially.

'My staff are all trained and come to me when they have seen a particular customer more than once a day, if the behaviour or the spending pattern of the customer becomes multiple times a day, we do have a word with them.”

Legal highs

My feelings are those that use them are "dumb and getting dumber". Why have the government not just gone down the same road as with what they would call a natural herb "Cannabis" and not make it legal at all. Seems to me we have successive governments who lack moral fibre. Sellers of and users should be treated the same and penalised hard. "Less demand, less want to sell". There will always be those that will abuse themselves we have enough with alcohol. I have drunk too much myself in years past and might again, but to add to it with more legal psychoactive substances is crazy and spineless from central government. Then they pass the problem on to your local council to administer. The shop keeper is just going to make a living in a legal manner. That is his choice and I defend and respect that.

MIKE LAWRENCE....to to the Ban Synthetic site and read the stories

There is a lot you can do Mike Lawrence.......PUT PEOPLE before PROFIT....just because you don't SEE the problem, does not mean they don't exist.......Did you hear all the tooting going on in support of the protesting.......You have been quoted in the newspaper as saying, "that the income from synthetics, subsidises the fact, that many people are giving up smoking", or words to that effect....it's all about profit for your business. Hopefully the laws will be changed, so that you cannot sell it

Hypocrites!

I notice people who openly admit that they use marijuana(which is illegal) there protesting against synthetic weed. Whilst I agree that synthetic weed should be banned(I have seen the effects of people using it), I find it absolutely hypocritical that users of illegal substance are there protesting! Maybe they are suppliers as well?????

legal highs

Do not these people realise that under the present laws council can control legal highs where if they were prohibited there would be no control.Look at alcohol prohibition in the States caused organised crime, increase in alcohol at least with legislation there are controls. I see that in Hamilton now legal highs are being sold through the internet and a person was arrested in the street selling legal highs so what did the council prohibition achieve ? Nothing except loss of control. Liquor sales cause more deaths , accidents and crime yet these people do not protest about this ! Why not?

It is so simple!!!

make the selling of all these heinous synthetic drugs illegal, end of story, why are we having all the posturing, public opinion is heavily supports a total ban,, so sign the bit of paper, and move on, I do not require to be fed a diet of "should we, should we not", just bloody do it!!!!.

It is the fault of lawyers

A law is written to ensure this garbage is banned. Problem is the lawyers who believe in the purity of the law means that substance A is modified to substance B means they can argue it is not the same substance therefore is legal. Never mind the trail of destruction their "cleverness" leaves behind, they have won. The voice of the ordinary person is irrelevant. You can change politicians but the lawyers still remain.

Here is a question Mike Lawrence-

But first a fact- there are young people from OUR community who have committed suicide after becoming addicted to synthetic drugs. My question is Mike, If you can prevent just ONE person from taking their own life by no longer selling such substances, why wouldn't you?

Fix the problem.

Time to elect a government that will actually do something about Synthetic Cannabis. The current mob just don't seem to care.
