Otumoetai College's annual Shave for a Cure has raised thousands of dollars for the Leukaemia and Blood Cancer Foundation with more cash donations on the way.

Today is the second of the three-day shaves and the college has already raised more than $6000 for the foundations.

It was an emotional day for students who shaved her hair for Otumoetai College's annual Shave for a Cure today. Photos: supplied.

Year 13 student Caitlin Jones says initially close to 20 boys and girls signed up to shave their hair, with more than 20 boys opting to wax their legs for the cause.

Even more plucked up the courage as lunchtime neared with an additional $200 raised today.

'We had some random, spontaneous sign ups in the last minute but overall we've had about seven or eight people waxing per day, more if they randomly sign up, and about seven shaving each day.”

Caitlin believes students are fronting up to shave their heads because of the major impact cancer can have on anyone.

'I think that a lot of them have family members, or friends, who have been through cancers. The awareness recently has been all throughout TV and we've been making it really public at school. So I think people are really getting involved this year.”

Teacher Charles Leota has been going without haircuts for a year and shaved it yesterday after making a deal with his students.

'He's been growing it [his hair] out for a year,” says Caitlin.

'He made a contract with his form class and they all said they would pay him $5 if he shaved it for cancer.”

Caitlin was quick to show her support after her mother's best friend died of breast cancer a few years ago.

'She was like a second mother to me, so that's why I've decided to take part of the wellbeing committee and raise money for the different cancer foundations that we've helped this year,” says Caitlin.

Farmers is gifting each student with a $20 voucher towards a beanie and Hair to Train is shaving student's hair for free. Tranquillo Beauty has also given discounts on waxing, with the money going towards the Leukaemia and Blood Cancer Foundation.

On Friday, March 21, Merivale School raised $1076 for the Leukaemia and Blood Cancer Foundation after a brave teacher lost her locks for the cause.

Teacher aid Tania Urwin, known as Whaea Tarnz, organised a mufti day for the school, where students were asked to bring a gold coin donation towards the cancer foundations.

'My grandmother had leukaemia and she died of complications and so when I saw it on my cousin's Facebook page I thought yeah I'll do that to try and raise awareness for kids.”

Public can donate at my.leukaemia.net.nz/otumoetaicollege to individual students, or make a team donation.

It was fantastic today to see so many girls shaving for a cure, along with the guys that did it too. Huge respect to them all. My daughter shaved her hair off, and the support was amazing for her and all involved. Well done Otumoetai College.
