Bike sold in $14,600 phone bid

A triumphant auction of a motorcycle built by the father of a young Tauranga woman who passed away last year has seen thousands raised for a heart health charity thanks to an Auckland man's $14,600 phone bid.

Born with a congenital heart defect, Jesse Gibb-Kimber was not expected to live past her fifth birthday. But the brave woman defied the odds and lived to age 21, before she passed away in Auckland Hospital last October.

In memory of Jesse, her father Mark Kimber –known to his friends and family as ‘Slope' – built a 1974 Triumph Trident 150v from a bare frame to auction off at Brewers Bar in Mount Maunganui, with all proceeds going to Bay of Plenty @Heart.

The auction, on Saturday night, saw an Auckland man make a phone bid of $14,600 on the bike.

BOP @Heart committee member Angela Griffiths is please with last night's turnout and says it was a very emotional evening.

'It was emotional in parts…and just looking at Jesse's dad you could see the emotion with him,” says Angela.

'It was a great atmosphere. It was really lovely to be a part of it. I felt very honoured…and it was a privilege to be there. I know that part of Jesse is going to our group.”

Angela says she will be meeting with the family to discuss the best way to spend the money.

Jesse was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension and an aortic abnormality at 18 months old. At the time there were seven other Kiwi children with the same problem, but Mark says Jesse's condition was the worst.
