Unaffordability solved locally – MP

Labour MP Su'a William Sio believes Tauranga's housing unaffordability will continue to rise unless the Government can implement a 'regional” model opposed to a broad-brushed Auckland approach.

The Labour spokesperson for Local Government and Pacific Island Affairs says serious steps need to be taken to remedy this – after hearing first-hand accounts of sub-standard living conditions within Tauranga's Pacific Island community.

Wow I'd never realised that a "regional model" as opposed to a "broad-brushed Auckland approach" would somehow miraculously solve our housing unaffordability problem. What the?

Sub standard

Surely sub standard is an emotive view and not subjective. I am of Pacific Island descent and live in an average dwelling, not as flash as some in Tauranga and a little more comfortable than others. My own family in the Cook Islands live comfortably and happily in what some would call sub standard living conditions. An average dwelling in Tauranga would be viewed as opulent in my native country. As for affordability, Tauranga, for a long time has been expensive and that isn't about to change. There are cheaper places to live in New Zealand but there are compromises necessary to live there.

Well said drgoon. You are absolutely right that sub standard is such a subjective and emotive issue. Poverty is another such word affiliated to this debate. When you visit third world countries then the concept or idea of poverty and sub standard does not exist in NZ.

Oh Lordy. Will Labour not stop running down Tauranga? We're actually able to look after ourselves and certainly don't need any "Auckland model"... I see their parachute candidate saw a photo-op in the visit. Maybe she should be campaigning in Auckland....
