The Rally Against TPPA is part of a nationwide event including 14 main centres around New Zealand.

In Tauranga, about 20 protestors staged a rally against the agreement, which aims to create a regional free trade agreement involving 12 Asia Pacific countries, at 1pm on Saturday.

The 12 countries include Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Peru, Singapore, the United States, Vietnam, Mexico, Canada and New Zealand.

Protestor Martin Stewart says the purpose of the event is to raise awareness about the agreement.

'The aim is to raise awareness, inform the public and create a group of likeminded people that want to help do whatever it takes to make sure there is a stop put on this agreement.”

Martin says the TPPA has not been publicly disclosed and believes many politicians are against the agreement.

'The TPPA has many opponents in all 12 countries and all of them are demanding transparency.”
