Blind bowler up for top award

Tauranga blind bowler David Monk is a finalist for the Halberg Disabled Sportsperson of the Year Award, following a successful year which included a world title.

Last month David received an award at the Bay of Plenty Sports Awards for service to disabled sport, and was a finalist in the region's Sportsman of the Year Award.

He is among four blind bowlers nominated in the Westpac Halberg Awards, all of whom were members of the national team he captained that claimed five medals at the world champs in England in July.

Last weekend David continued his winning ways claiming another national title - about the 20th he has taken in as many years.

'It's just a matter of getting stuck in, getting some help from family and friends and setting some goals.”

Mount Maunganui Surf Life Saving Club member Lisa Carrington is a finalist for the High Performance Sportswoman of the Year category. The winners from a total of 58 nominations will be announced on February 13.

Halberg Disability Sport Foundation CEO, Geoff Burgess, says the high calibre of nominations reflects a year of outstanding sports performances by New Zealand athletes.
