Artist makes her mark

Tauranga artist and designer Te Rahui August is privileged that her creation has been selected as the logo for the new Golden Sands School in Papamoa, which opens in February 2011.

Golden Sands School Board of Trustees chairman Vince Butler says elements of the logo represent the literal and figurative notions of unity, family, strength, reaching for the stars and achievement.
In Te Rahui’s logo, there is a central harakeke leaf, which consists of five kapirua, or inverted nodes, that represent the values of the school such as respect, integrity, communication, courage and fun.
The gold in the logo represents the sand of Papamoa’s beaches and pingao sedge – a plant that is vital to the preservation of Papamoa’s sand dunes.
Te Rahui says the final design was a collaborative effort with members of the school’s Boart of Trustees.
“I’m ecstatic that with my assistance Golden Sands School now have a logo they can own and be proud of.”
She says the Board of Trustees has a very clear vision of how they wanted to incorporate the schools’ values into the logo.
“After meeting with the EBOT to get a feel for the school they are trying their best to build, I was able to put some ideas together from a Maori perspective, a Tauranga perspective and of course a modern design perspective as well,” says Te Rahui.
