Convicted rapists appeal case

Five Tauranga men found guilty of pack raping a woman in Pyes Pa in 2011 are appealing their convictions.

Samuel Owen Weenink, 20, Corey Clinton Owens, 20, and Dylan John O'Neill, 21, were sentenced to 12 years and nine months' jail in December 2012, while co-offender Richard James Cameron Morton, 21, received a sentence of 11 years and four months' jail.

At the time of the sentencing, Justice Raynor Asher gave the fifth offender Paul McMaster, 21, 13 years, as he also hit the woman when she bit him.

A rape charge against Morton was dropped on the basis he did not have sexual intercourse with the woman, instead forcing her to perform another sexual act. He was found guilty of being party to the rape.

Now the men are appealing their convictions, having taken their case to the Court of Appeal in October.

SunLive understands a court decision is yet to be released.

According to court documents, the men invited the female victim to a night of drinking and socialising. During the night she went out for a cigarette and when she returned, was grabbed, stripped and raped.

The woman suffered multiple bruises to her chest, arms and legs and mouth.
