Life savers make golden splash

Papamoa surf life savers have made a resounding splash across the Tasman collecting 23 medals at the 2013 Australian Pool Rescue Championships in Brisbane.

Held at the Sleeman Sports Complex during the weekend, the 15-strong team produced an outstanding performance winning seven gold, six silver and 10 bronze medals.

Led by Papamoa Surf Life Saving Club head coach and New Zealand Development coach Kurt Wilson, the nine Papamoa members, four New Zealand development members and two South Brighton members, got into the winning rhythm early claiming seven medals on day one.

Competing in a range of events including the 200m super lifesaver, 100m manikin tow with fins and 100m rescue medley the extensive medal haul is the best in the club's racing history in Australia reflecting the talent and ability of the athletes.

Ahead of the competition, coach Kurt Wilson said the aim of crossing the Tasman for the competition was to expose some of the newer athletes to the high level of competition in Australia with Rescue 2014 only 12 months away.

Some of the highlights of the competition included New Zealand team member Natalie Peat, who is off to the International Surf Rescue Challenge in Japan next month, smashing the under-19 100m Manikin Tow with fins setting a new Australian record of 1 minute 3.90 seconds.

Under-20 team member Ben Johnston won silver in the under-17 Super Lifesaver and New Zealand Development Squad member and Sumner Surf Life Saving clubbie Brittany Tucker won gold in the under-17 50m with fins.

Papamoa Surf Life Saving Club administrator Anita Trappitt says it is a wonderful achievement for the club and it is always god for Kiwis to do well on Australian soil.

'We are just absolutely rapt with the showing of our team members and really pleased with a star in our coaching department.

'It's really just helping foster these young ones and helping them achieve their goals and get international recognition.”
