Fleeing driver pleads guilty

The 30-year-old man arrested on Monday morning after he crashed into a Mount Maunganui building trying to flee from police pleaded guilty today.

Appearing in Tauranga's Registrar's Court this morning, Mustafa Sabanli admitted to charges of driving with excess breath alcohol, dangerous driving and failing to stop.

Sabanli was arrested following a high speed police chase which ended in a crash on Hull Road in the early hours of Monday morning.

At about 3am police received a phone call from a member of the public travelling behind an Audi which was weaving across both lanes of Takitimu Drive, heading towards Mount Maunganui.

Police pulled over the vehicle on the corner of Hewlett's Road and Totara Street but the man accelerated, fleeing north on Totara Street, when police approached the driver's door.

Reaching speeds in excess of 130kmh, he failed to negotiate the Totara Street and Hull Road roundabout, crashing into the building and writing off the Audi he was driving.

When police breath tested him, Sabanli blew 924 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath: more than twice the legal limit.

He was remanded on bail and will appear before a judge for sentencing on June 25.
