Protestors outside McDonald's

Union workers are protesting wage rates outside McDonald's today and are warning there are more protests to come.

About 15 Unite Union members gathered on Cameron Road outside McDonald's 11th Avenue branch around lunchtime to protest.

This is the first union protest in Tauranga and protestors say they are not happy with minimum wage rates.

Organiser and Unite Union member Bonita Moyes says people are also protesting the number of allocated breaks she says employees are working through and not being paid for.

'This multinational company is only paying the 25 cent maximum wage increase Government has given. That's all the company is willing to put on the table. You can't live on that”.

Protests are happening across the country in Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, and Bonita says there are more to come.

'Watch this space. The people have spoken.”

Bonita says a minimum wage of $13.75 is not an appropriate living wage and workers are not even being promised permanent work hours.

'It's about the security of hours so that people can actually survive. Some workers don't even do 40 hours a week."

About two years ago Bonita says the union noticed employees were working through their allocated breaks and still having their pay deducted for breaks they hadn't taken.

She says if employees are being forced to work through their breaks, they should be getting paid.

'That's not even happening now.”

For three years Bonita says Unite Union has been promoting a minimum $15 living wage.

McDonald's Restaurants NZ communications manager Kim Bartlett says McDonald's has been in negotiations with the union that represent 20 per cent of its employees.

"Despite having made good progress we have been unable to reach an agreement, and so we are in dispute."

Kim says none of the group protesting today were McDonald's employees.

If the workers aren't happy wouldn't they leave and find something else. Really over these try hard do good ers - bet they wouldn't paid $7 for a big mac. I would be interested to see how many of the protesters are on a benefit themselves.

I think this comment is rubbish! These people are standing up against high global corporations who exploit there workers by paying only minimum wage, securing hours of work, protecting against workplace bullying etc....people won't just leave there job because there are not many jobs out there. I think the title of your comment is subjected to refer to yourself. And when you talk about beneficiaries, you either must be a rich snob who only cares about yourself or your hiding behind your own crap. Well done to these guys for their courage to represent and support workers who need a fair go in their employment

the reason the staff won't protest is because of bullying my son worked for mac donalds for a while and I told him to leave they are a bunch of bullies degrading staff and making degrading comments to the younger ones not to menting my son slipped on wet floors twice and hurt his back and took a chunk out of his knee yet they made no accident report and he was put off work by the dr for his back yet maccas wanted him to still come into work bunch of so and sos and they have the cheek to pay crap wages as far as finding another job it is not that easy a lot of the staff at maccas are there until something comes up so they are working and earning something until something better comes so don't put them down for that at least they are not sitting on the dole they are working for low lives instead and putting up with crap until something better comes up maccas owners need to stop being low lives and pay what the workers are worth because without these kids they would have to do the work them selves maybe a strike is on the cards
