Road closures and evacuations

Heavy rain continuing to hammer parts of Western Bay of Plenty is resulting in road closures and evacuations around the region.

Waihi Beach is one of the worst hit regions tonight with reports the Top 10 Holiday Park is being evacuated due to flash flooding.

Flooding has caused road closures around the region. See photos of flooding around the region here.

Northern Fire Communications spokesperson Jarron Philips says firefighters are currently dealing with a slip blocking the Waihi Beach Road.

A car is believed to have been caught in the slip.

Jarron says there is also concern for the rising level of the Waihi Beach Stream.

The holiday park on Beach Road at the northern end of Waihi Beach is also being evacuated.

A person at the holiday park says all of the guests and residents are evacuating the park due to flash flooding.

Firefighters are on site, and all of the guests have found alternate accomodation for the night.

Police are advising Waihi Beach Road and part of SH2 between Waihi and the turn-off to Waihi Beach is closed.

The Athenree Gorge is also closed, meaning the only access to Waihi Beach from the north is through Paeroa to Te Aroha, Matamata, Tauranga and then to Katikati.

The next high tide at Waihi Beach is 2.34am Sunday.

There are also reports of flash flooding in Omokoroa.

Tauranga road closures

Tauranga Police tonight issued a road closure notice for a number of roads due to flooding and are asking motorists to avoid these areas until they have been cleared.

Presently a section of State Highway 29 from Barkes Corner and Pyes Pa Road to Oropi Road roundabout is closed.

State Highway 36 from the roundabout near the crematorium on Pyes Pa Road to The Lakes subdivision is closed.

Signs have been placed on road to advise motorists.

Tauranga Senior Sergeant Eddie Little is advising motorists to avoid the road, and drive with extreme caution.

He says the situation is changing, and the region could experience more flooding with the high tide.

A heavy rain warning for Tauranga remains in place.
