Northern Fire Communications shift manager Nicole Bernard said firefighters recieved a call to a fire in a bedroom at a private property on Waitaha Road.

Two crews from Greerton and one from Tauranga station were called to the fire in the single storey home.

St John Ambulance were also at the scene where one person is being treated for smoke inhalation.

It is not known how many people were inside the house when the fire started.

The house is situated at the end of a shared driveway off Waitaha Road.

Residents at neighbouring properties reported smelling the smoke from inside their homes before going outside to investigate.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Colin Underdown says the fire was contained to the bedroom.

He says the fire is not being treated as suspicious and no fire safety officers were called to the scene.

It is not yet known what caused the fire.
