PM to open new marina

Whangamata's new marina is on track for handover on October 21 and an official opening in November by Prime Minister John Key.

'The basin is fully excavated now,” says project manager John Knappett.
'They have just got one more finger to put in. That's 10 berths. The other 200 berths are already in.”
The contractor for the civil works, Heb, is in the process of completing the sub base for the car park and hard stand.
'I'm very confident we are going to meet contract completion date of October 21,” says John.
'There is about another month's digging in the channel. Two barges are working on that as we speak. That's it. All the difficult stuff is done.”
If the handover goes ahead on October 21, then boats will be permitted to move in shortly afterwards.
John Key will officially open the new marina on November 21.
Heb Construction Ltd is completing the civil works. The marina fingers, pontoons and piling are being installed by the Auckland company, Total Marine Services.

unsustainable development

With the deliberate extermination of the rare Oligosoma moco skink, and the displacement of many other species from what was once an area of significant conservation value to provide a car park and high density housing area for this marina, we can cannot, and should not be proud of this act of destruction. Before this project went ahead the estuary had a rating of National Signifcance. I wonder what it is worth now? If we do not learn from the mistakes made here, we are doomed to repeat them.
