Reflecting on the injuries suffered by a man at his Eastern Waikato home overnight, Thames Police say a youth arrested in connection with the attack is lucky not to be facing more serious charges.

Thames Sub-Area Manager, Senior Sergeant Graham Shields, says emergency services were called to a Matatoki address around 5pm after reports of a person suffering serious injuries in an assault.

"Ambulance staff attended the 23-year-old victim’s injuries and the man was taken to Waikato Hospital by ambulance with serious injuries and we understand he is in a stable condition in the hospital’s High Dependency Unit.

"Police officers conducting follow up enquiries located a 16-year-old teenager nearby a short time later and this male will be appearing in the Hamilton Youth Court today facing a charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm."
