It was a night of mixed emotions for 12-year-old Fletcher Oxford on Sunday night.

After months of singing in the spotlight, the Tauranga Intermediate student placed fifth in the grand-final of New Zealand's Got Talent.

Fletcher Oxford placed fifth in the grand-final of New Zealand's Got Talent last night.

Fletcher found out he was not in the top three on Thursday night, but the remainder of the results were a surprise until Sunday.

The top spot went to 15-year-old Blenheim singer Clara Van Wel who takes away a $100,000 cash prize, a recording contract and a car.

'I wasn't exactly thinking about winning, but I just wanted to be a part of the last show,” says Fletcher.

'Fifth will grow on me, I'll get happy with fifth.

'I'm so glad I did it – it's been the most amazing experience; you couldn't beat it in the whole entire world. The best opportunity to get myself and my songs out there, it's been great.”

The avid songwriter says it was tough watching someone else win the title, but he is happy for his friend Clara.

'It was quite exciting for me to find out. But it was also quite a sad night, watching another competitor win, it was quite hard.

'She was a good friend of mine when we were back stage. I'm really excited for her, she's going on to bigger and better places.”

Fletcher is looking to the future now, working on his first album, which he hopes to record with NZGT judge Jason Kerrison – who told him on the show he would help him make an album.

'Jason Kerrison said to me if I have any trouble getting an album together I should give him a call.

'I will be giving him a call.”

And his long-lost cat Sushi?

'She's still out there somewhere. She ran away four years ago, we know she's still on the farm somewhere because we've seen her a few times on the farm.

'So we know she's okay and she's still out there. You never know, she could just walk in the door someday.”
