A Bay of Plenty farmer is in Waikato Hospital in a serious condition after he was struck on the head with a fence post rammer.

The 63-year-old Whakatane man was flown to hospital by the Westpac Waikato Air Ambulance after being transported by a specialist ICY retrieval team to Whakatane on Wednesday.

Pilot Dan Harcourt says St John Paramedics had earlier taken the man to Whakatane Hospital.

He says the farmer was admitted to hospital overnight.
