Police car involved in fatal crash

Counties Manukau Police can confirm that today at 8.39am a police car and a vehicle being driven by a member of the public were involved in a crash.

It is understood the police vehicle was travelling along Ormiston Road approaching the intersection of Preston Road and East Tamaki Road.

The police officer, who was en route to a priority one job, collided with the other vehicle.

The vehicle was being driven by a male, age unknown, and was carrying one passenger, a female in her 40’s.

Both members of the public were seriously injured and when travelling by ambulance to Middlemore Hospital the female passed away.

The male is currently in a serious but stable condition.

The police officer involved in the crash has minor injuries.

Serious Crash Unit is investigating the incident and the Independent Police Conduct Authority has been advised.

A media conference will be held today at Police National Headquarters, 180 Molesworth Street, Wellington at 1pm.

Counties Manukau District Commander, John Tims will lead the briefing.
