A car went up in flames in a suspicious fire at a property in Hairini overnight.

The occupants of Harrisfield Drive home woke at about midnight to find a car parked on their front lawn in flames.

Emergency services work to extinguish a car fire in Hairini.

The three residents, one in her early 20s, and the other two in their 30s, phoned emergency services.

Greerton Fire Brigade responded to the call and arrived at the Tauranga home to find the car ablaze.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Steve Smith says a fire safety officer was called at the time of the blaze.

Steve says he is due to return to the property this morning to complete a scene examination.

“Once the fire was out, it was left in the hands of the police.”

Police are investigating the cause of the fire.

The residents of the property were actually asleep and unaware of the fire. Neighbours rang 111, and their actions by hosing down the walls of the house prevented the fire from spreading.
