As a search of the Waikato River recommences today, Hamilton Police searching for a person last seen struggling in water below the Fairfield Bridge last week believe they know who they are looking for.

Detective Karl Little of the Hamilton Enquiries Section says the family of a 23-year-old man contacted police over the weekend concerned about the whereabouts of their son.

“A jacket recovered from the middle of the Waikato River under the Pukete Bridge during the initial search on Wednesday night has been identified as being similar to one the man’s family believe he bought recently.

“The search has continued since the initial report by a female jogger who heard and saw someone struggling in the water as she ran across the Fairfield Bridge about 8pm. The woman ran to a nearby home and phoned 111 resulting in a search by Police, Fire and St John ambulance staff.”

Karl says a search boat crewed by Police Search and Rescue staff would resume the search this morning searching riverbanks between the Fairfield Bridge and Ngaruawahia.

“While this is going on, as river levels drop we would ask land owners bordering the Waikato River and people who frequent the river either on land or on boats to notify Police if they notice anything out of the ordinary.”
