The Mount Maunganui man accused of attacking two women at an Arataki address has been denied electronic bail.

Phillip Hunter, 29, is accused of beating two women, aged 22 and 39, at a Carter Street property on July 12.

The women were taken to Tauranga Hospital with facial and head injuries and later discharged.

Hunter appeared in Tauranga District Court on Monday charged with two counts wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

In court his lawyer sought electronic bail on the grounds that Hunter wanted to prove himself to the court and was unlikely to get a trial date until next year.

Hunter is yet to enter a plea on the charges.

Judge Paul Geoghegan was hesitant to grant Hunter bail because he allegedly committed the “brutal attacks” while on bail for another charge of wounding with intent.

Judge Geoghegan denied Hunter bail and remanded him in custody to appear in Tauranga District Court on September 11.
