A bill to ban gang-patches from government owned building is currently before parliament with the first reading of the bill, sponsored by Bay of plenty based  MP Todd McClay, taking place this week.

Murupara, Kawerau and Rotorua MP Todd McClay’s private members bill - Prohibition of Gang Insignia in Government Premise Bill - aims to ban gang patches from state-owned enterprises.

The first debate of the member’s bill took around an hour and was voted on at the end of the discussion.

People who breached the ban will face a summary conviction and a fine of up to $2000.

SunLive asked the community what their thoughts on gang-patches were, with most people saying they felt intimidated by them.

But I think it’s more about making the public think you’re tough on crime. Ban gang members from getting govt benefits and hospital treatment. That would have my respect.

Why should we be intimidated

We shouldn’t have to be intimidated by people wearing gang patches. I fully agree, ban them from government buildings but why not ban them from city centres. Would put alot more people at ease.
