A 10-year-old boy is dead after the car he was in crashed into a pond at a goldmine near Ruatapu in Westland.

The boy’s eight-year-old sister was rescued alive from the vehicle which rolled into the pond on Sunday night.

The girl spent more than two hours in the submerged vehicle before being rescued by Police Officers and firefighters.

Police have also recovered the body of the girl’s 10 year-old brother from the vehicle.

Police are not looking for any other victims of this evening’s accident.

The girl has been taken to hospital suffering hypothermia and is reported to be doing well.

A scene guard is in place overnight and an investigation into the accident will resume tomorrow.
