Rain is being predicted for the Bay of Plenty region on Saturday evening with heavy falls expected to develop in the north.

The MetService says heavy rain is expected to ease to showers in the Bay of Plenty on Sunday.

MetService media and communication meteorologist Daniel Corbett says an active procession of weather systems is maintaining an unsettled theme to the weather across New Zealand this week.

“With several different weather systems to come, it has been a week where we’ve kept the raincoats close to hand.”

The Bay’s recent fine weather is being attributed to what meteorologists call ’blocking’ in the atmosphere which has been slowing the weather systems down.

“Think of it like a boulder in a stream, blocking the fast flowing water and allowing an eddy to remain in the same position for some time.”
