A calf found on the side of the road is now safely back home after it fell off a back of a truck.

A motorist called the SPCA when they saw the calf on the side of the road in Tauranga last Wednesday.

The calf has been returned to its owner thanks to it bein ear tagged.

SPCA Tauranga operations manager Margaret Rawhiri says they calf was picked up by the farmer on Friday.

“This was our latest out of the ordinary rescue, we received an emergency call just as we were locking up for the day, a calf had fallen off the back of a trailer and was on the side of the road. So off we went to save the day.”

In a post on Facebook, Margaret says “Thank goodness the calf was still in good health just a few knocks from the fall, staff were more than happy to bottle feed for a couple of nights.”
She says thanks to the calf being ear tagged the owners were relatively easy to find and were very thankful.

“This is a happy ending for the calf. Unfortunately, we picked up a litter of puppies last night which were dumped on the side of the road.”

Margaret says they have a lot of puppies for adoption.

“This litter was five black and white puppies, but we have all kinds at the shelter.”
