A severe weather warning has been issued for the Western Bay of Plenty predicting heavy rain and strong winds for today and tomorrow.

The MetService says the severe weather is predicted to last until Tuesday as a front sweeps over the North Island.

Heavy rain is expected to hammer parts of the Bay of Plenty in the next two days.

A strong northeast airstream ahead of this front is expected to bring periods of heavy rain to the Bay of Plenty, where as much as 160mm may fall in places by Monday night.

Gusty easterlies are also expected to last until Tuesday.

The MetService is advising people to watch out for surface flooding, slips and rapidly rising streams and rivers.
