Waikato Police investigating a fatal motorcycle crash north of Huntly this morning say it may be some time before the cause of the incident is determined.

District Road Policing Manager, Inspector Leo Tooman, says emergency services were called to the scene of the crash on SH1, at the start of the Waikato Expressway south of the Rangiriri Tavern, about 7.55am.

"Members of the Serious Crash Unit are investigating the crash and carried out a preliminary analysis of the scene before SH1 was reopened about 10.30am.

"Initial indications are the male rider, believed to be aged in his early seventies, has encountered some difficulties on his southbound BMW motorbike and fallen off the vehicle, suffering fatal injuries."

Investigators do not believe any other vehicle was involved in the incident and are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash, who hasn’t already been interviewed, to contact the Huntly Police Station on 07 828 7560.
