A Tauranga policeman’s son who kidnapped his ex-girlfriend and led police on two high-speed chases on Valentine’s Day has been sentenced to six months community detention.

Ryan Matthew Beilby, 20, appeared in the Rotorua District Court on Thursday morning for sentencing after earlier pleading guilty to kidnapping and assault charges.

He was convicted and discharged on a charge of failing to stop.

According to the summary of facts on February 14 Bielby kidnapped his ex-girlfriend near Tauranga and drove through the Kaimai Ranges reaching high speeds.

Police were called but the chase was abandoned when speeds reached around 170km/h.

The pursuit resumed when Bielby was seen an hour later and ended when he crashed through a farm fence.

The Judge says Bielby showed “genuine remorse” and was turning his life around.

Bielby is to complete 300 hours community work and be under intensive supervision for 12 months.

He is also forbidden from associating with his victim unless given permission to do so by his probation officer and disqualified from driving for 12 months.

Ryan Bielby is the son of Senior Sergeant Ross Bielby.

As long as others are treated the same

In other words, if you kidnap, lead police on a chase possibly reaching 170 km/h, and express remorse, then you get the same lenient sentence. It’s all part of the Government getting tough on crime????

Poor Parents

It is easy for people to judge others who do not have the full facts at hand. I am not by any means condoning what this kid has done nor what the punishment given was, but think of the poor parents, regardless of who they are and what position they hold, I bet they are doing it twice as hard as their child involved. Its so easy for everyone to get on their moral high ground and criticize them

WHO KNOW'S WHAT HERE?

I’d like to know the name of the Judge too - just in case I ever get into trouble I’d like the same Judge.

Another corrupt judge

5 weeks community service? Handy to have a cop as dad.

Not what you do but who you know

I sincerely hope that the Judge did NOT give him such a light sentence because of his father’s occupation. I would think because his father was a policeman that he should know the repercussions of abduction, driving at extremely dangerous speeds, speeds which the police could not safely travel at I might add. As for remorse, a fact lot of good that does the victim who will most certainly have some form of post traumatic stress disorder. Probably the remorse has more to do with the position he has put his father in. TWO high speed chases. If this was an ordinary citizen, or one from a family with a history of getting into trouble with ’the law’, I bet you they would have got far harsher sentences. Seen harsher punishments for dic!!!

WHAT'S THIS LOT ?

Who was the District Court Judge involved with this case.We should not lose sight of the fact this prosecution involved a kidnapping, assault, failure to stop and presumably dangerous driving or driving at a dangerous speed etc.
