New Zealand First is concerned that a lack of publicity surrounding the Treaty of Waitangi settlements discussed in Parliament this week will lead to misunderstanding and confusion in the wider community.
MÄori Affairs spokesperson Brendan Horan says the four treaty settlements are supported by all parties in Parliament but this lack of disagreement may actually be hampering media coverage.
“There is no political stoush and therefore no media hook but it is important that all New Zealanders understand exactly what these settlements mean.
“Each settlement provides a crucial and integral part of our country’s history by acknowledging past grievances between MÄori and the Crown and nurturing the healing process for all New Zealanders.
“I urge the media to report on the settlement-legislation when it returns to Parliament for its third reading next week.”
