Tonight's game a must-win for Magic

Waikato/Bay of Plenty Magic says tonight's match against the Queensland Firebirds is a "do-or-die" situation, despite winning their past eight games in the ANZ Championship campaign.

Magic is sitting third on the table for the first time in the competition ahead of tonight's game in Hamilton – the final round-robin game of the season.

Irene van Dyk says tonight's game will be a fight Magic is determined to win.

But goal shooter Irene van Dyk says a victory tonight is still crucial if Magic is to secure a place in the semi-finals.

'We're on the right track and we've just got to keep going and not get too carried away, because what we've done over the last eight weeks has worked for us.

'As far as we're concerned this is another do-or-die game.”

Magic are the only team to have reached the Championship's semi-finals every year but are yet to take away the title.

After four consecutive losses at the start of the season, it has been a slow journey back to the top for Magic.

Magic coach Noeline Taurua says the team is determined to stay positive and continue what they have been doing the past eight games.

'The pressure's there, but it's not a pressure that we're fearful of because we know what this pressure's all about…..we've had it since round three.

'It has helped us build to where we are now and that's in a good space.”

Noeline is confident the processes that have served the team so well in recent weeks will remain in place for whatever the Firebirds, who must win and rely on other results to make the play-offs, throw at them.

'There's always risk and sometimes you don't know that until you get into a game as to where the players are at, and that doesn't change.

'We can play the Magic way which is turn and let the ball go but I feel over the weeks we've been playing that disciplined style as well. I just feel we've got enough in our back pocket that if things aren't going right we can play real tight simple netball to get ourselves through.

'I'm excited. It's a great challenge and a great opportunity.”
