The Hoe Aroha Waka Ama Club in Tauranga held its Karewa Revival Ocean Race in support of the Fluffy Slippers heading to the World Outrigger Sprint Championships in Canada in August.

The Fluffy Slippers will represent New Zealand at the world championships.

Race director Mike Hickson says they had nine teams, one team made up of women and eight made up of men.

He says they had competitors from all over including Auckland and Gisborne.

“It was a competitive race, mostly for pride.”

People took part in a 28km race, which was last held around two years ago.

Hence the revival part in the name, says Mike.

“The weather was beautiful and the water was glassy with half a metre swell, perfect conditions.

“We have a good number of teams considering it’s a mid-winter race.”

Competitors had to break ice before they could begin the race this morning.
